Puzzle Hall meets the editor of the Good Beer Guide

simon with roger protz

Simon (landlord) and Chris (cellarman) recently attended Little Valley Brewery's relaunch event in Cragg Vale, Hebden Bridge and spent some time talking beer with none other than Roger Protz, beer writer, journalist and editor of CAMRA's famous Good Beer Guide.

The moorland views from the brewery are amazing and the perfect setting to enjoy some of Little Valley's organic beers.

Roger was pretty happy to chat to us about the current state of pubs and the many micro breweries we have in the UK, and Yorkshire in particular.

Fine Ales, Good Music, Great Atmosphere

You've got to Love The Puzzle

The Puzzle Hall Inn in Sowerby Bridge, near Halifax, in Calderdale is a great little pub serving up real ales and excellent music, and is well known in this part of Yorkshire. The 17th Century building once included a brewery, the bottom floor of which now hosts live bands. Alternative, Jazz, Blues, Folk bands usually play Thursdays and Saturdays, and on other nights from time to time. Open Mic nights are held on the last Thursday of the month. We also run 'Bad Fruit' on the last Sunday of the month, showcasing the best acoustic talent in the region and poetry is the first Monday of the month. In the summer we hold outdoor festivals - these have a massive following and we expand our range of real ales from the 6 to 12. We also serve up several ciders, perries and bottled beers all year round. We have an outdoor area, perfect for sitting in the sun and well behaved dogs are welcome both inside and out. Despite being called an inn, we do not have accommodation.

Walkers, Cyclists & Canal Boat Owners

We're positioned on Route 66, part of the Sustrans Cycleway that runs from Hull to Manchester, about 6 miles south east of Halifax. We're at the start of the Calder Valley Cycleway, running from Sowerby Bridge, through Luddenden Foot, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden to the border of Rochdale at Warland. We're about 30 miniutes cycle ride on the canal from Hebden Bridge, an hour from Todmorden and and hour and half from Littleborough. We're also the first pub you come to on the Rochdale canal, coming from the direction of Hebden Bridge.

So, come down and take advantage of our friendly atmosphere, 6 real ales, open fires and free wireless. We have a covered outdoor area, ideal for cyclists and dog owners alike. No doubt you'll meet some colourful characters here at 'The Puzzle'.

Musicians

Many of the people you find in the Puzzle Hall are musicians. We have a solid reputation for putting on some of the best talent on the scene today and have a knack for snagging some of the bigger bands you wouldn't normally expect to see outside of large venues. All our gigs are free, so just turn up early and enjoy the show.

Tickets?

You don't need tickets to see the bands, just turn up and enjoy! Don't worry, we pay the bands to make sure they keep coming back. If you see an old hat being passed around, it's customary to buy the bands a drink, so drop some coins in and smile in the knowledge that your favourite musicians know that you love them!
